School is just about to start for many kids and that means that scheduling appointments is going to get a bit trickier. But don't put off treatment! If restorative work is needed, it is best to get it scheduled sooner rather than later so minor issues don't become major ones. If expanders are recommended, kids may need some time to adjust to them since they can feel awkward in their mouths, so again, the sooner the better!
Our practice has some open appointments available before school starts so feel free to call during business hours to schedule visits. For appointments scheduled after the school year begins, we provide excused absence notes, which can be sent home with your student.
A common issue we are seeing with kids at school is an increase in eating unhealthy snacks. Kids often snack at school in addition to having lunch, so while brushing may not be feasible during school hours, drinking plenty of water and avoiding sticky foods can help maintain dental health.
When it comes to packed snacks and lunches, fresh fruits and veggies are excellent choices for healthy teeth. It's important to avoid sugary, sticky foods, and sodas and opt for water instead. For students with braces, sticky foods and popcorn should be avoided as they can cause problems. Students who wear retainers should bring their retainer container to school to safely store their retainer during lunch and DO NOT THROW IT AWAY!
And if your student is participating in after-school sports, we offer custom-made mouthguards. If you are interested in getting one, give us a call to schedule your appointment as soon as possible, as they take time to prepare.
This month, we are celebrating a new addition to our team. We are so excited to welcome Dr. Mitra Marvasti-Sitterly to our team full time as of August 11! Dr. Marvasti has been coming in on occasional Saturdays to see patients during the school year while completing her additional pediatric residency training this past year. Please give her a warm welcome when you come into the office! Also, we are celebrating three birthdays in August. Jill, our financial coordinator, Annette, one of our amazing hygienists, and our very own Dr. Azadpur!
We are excited to see you all back after a long summer and hope everyone has a great start to the school year.
